More about YSR Reading Program
Not all reading programs are created equal. Many rely on Balanced Literacy, which encourages guessing strategies, cueing systems, and memorization instead of explicit, systematic phonics instruction. These approaches often leave struggling readers behind.
The Young Stars Read (YSR) program is different. It follows Structured Literacy, an approach backed by the Science of Reading, ensuring that children master the essential skills of reading in a clear, sequential, and systematic way. Instead of teaching children to rely on pictures or context clues, YSR develops strong decoding, fluency, and comprehension skills through direct instruction in:
✅ Phonemic awareness – recognizing and manipulating sounds in words
✅ Phonics – decoding words based on letter-sound relationships
✅ Fluency – building automatic word recognition
✅ Vocabulary – understanding word meanings and usage
✅ Comprehension – making sense of text through structured, guided practice
Who Am I?
My name is Carlo, and I am a literacy specialist teacher in my school district on the North Shore. Before this role, I spent over 20 years teaching early primary, mainly Kindergarten, where I successfully taught hundreds of young children to read. Now, I help struggling readers from K-7 find a new, evidence-based path to reading success.

Rates and Information
ALL SESSIONS ARE AT/IN THE CLIENT'S HOME
Initial Literacy Assessment Consultation – 1 hour: $60
A complete assessment, identifying your child's strengths and weaknesses. The assessment looks at phonological and phonetic skills, reading fluency, word recognition and comprehension. From this assessment, I will create a clear plan forward for your child's path to reading.
***Parents are required to sit in and stay for the complete assessment.
Subsequent Direct Personalized Intervention – 30 minutes: $30 or 45 minutes: $45
Targeted, personalized intervention based on your child's initial literacy assessment.
***North Vancouver Sessions (3:15-4:30pm, Mondays/Tuesdays/Thursdays)
ALL NORTH VANCOUVER AFTER SCHOOL SESSIONS ARE CURRENTLY FILLED
- if you are NOT a current client, do not book any sessions and instead, please contact me with your information if you would like your child placed on a wait-list.
- for current clients, please book a 6pm or later time slot for the allocated day. I will confirm exact time directly with you between 3:15pm and 4:30pm.
